Why would CG take his own rig to redline if he builds the 'same' tranny? Can't figure that one out. I know we work hard for our money, and I would rather spend it on something I know will perform, than something I hope might perform. That goes for any shop that has unrealistic prices, on parts that I know cost a lot more. I'm a frugal person, but you get what you pay for. I'm not into refurb or "like new" parts for my vehicle, just to save a penny. That's one thing I don't want to be stingy on. Ever get a refurb "like new" cell phone and it never works like a new one? Well, thats because it's not new, and will probably never perform like a brand new item.
Your best bet is to do your research and make the decision you think is best for you, your truck and your wallet. If something comes back to haunt you, at least you can learn from the mistake and move on.

Well hmmm...as a person who will soon be needing a tranny rebuild I'm kind of interested in this thread. I've read about really happy customers from BOTH places, and I'm thinking that it is commendable that RDP has had the ability, time, effort, and talent to be able to create and test their own parts - However I don't think there is anything wrong with CG using the Goerend products to rebuild transmissions either. From what I've read (I got the screws put to me by a trans place a while back, so I've started reading/researching more for my next trans endeavor) Goerend has quality products and they stand behind their stuff too. That being said, I can understand why 1MeanCummins posted what he did - He's spent years developing his techniques, parts, and reputation as a standalone shop. Maybe CG was misinformed or was thinking of a different shop, but I'm sure he understands why 1MC posted what he did.

Anyway, maybe I'm thinking about it too much or possibly in the wrong way, but I do know that Dave Goerend himself said,"Anything you do to reduce costs will come back to you later" (Diesel Power, April 2008), and he was speaking specifically about rebuilds for your application, i.e. if you're going to rebuild the tranny, new vb, new tqc, and push out 500 hp, then DON'T skimp on upgrading your shafts as well. I want to stress that these next comments are NOT directed at Redline b/c I don't know about their pricing - Just b/c CG's pricing is low doesn't mean that you're getting a substandard part or service...I shelled out over 4 grand a couple years ago to have my transmission and components beefed up and that was just in parts! And some of those parts have done nothing except mess up and cause trouble - I could go on and be a Bitter Barney about it, but I've done some looking in to Goerend and that's the route I was going to head this time. Higher priced doesn't necessarily mean better quality.

Sorry for the long rambling rant...my truck has been down and I miss it...stupid ecm :banging

i already have 40k on my transmission rebuild from CG and i have a trailer or a load in the bed at least twice a month since september. In summer it was twice a week. Now i have a new gooseneck that my truck gets to play with. So far i'm happy as can be with it.

I don't think anyone here wants this to be a CG is better than Redline bash fest here. From what I have read both shops provide top quality service, parts and knowledge to their customers. 1MC posted to correct the wrong statement that was posted....nothing more than that. I personally think the site would be better if both Redline and CG would post and help us with issues and give advice but if this keeps going were are going to lose out on that and it will be a bad thing in the long run. There are plenty of people to support each shop and I don't feel either shop needs to be "bashed" If you have had work performed by one or both of them and some one asks a question post up what you had done and if you are satisfied and leave it at that. I know the Admins have tossed the idea of haivng some site sponsors and this is not the way to go about leaving that door open. So IMO it's as simple as this:

CG uses quality Goerend transmissions and parts

Redline builds theirs in house with their own R&D and proprietary parts they developed.

Both are going to give you a great trans with many years of use and a good warranty to make you feel comfortable with dropping a bunch of coin. Both of them have great customer service and have went above and beyond for their customers.

So was that the problem for sure???

No matter what shop your talking about someone will always have something bad to say about them, its just the nature of the diesel world. The problem with most trans shops is that they dont tell you EXACTLY what goes into the trans so its almost impossible to get a relavant price comparison. I mean a HD kit from one place may not be the same quality/parts as a HD kit from another place. I know a lot more about auto trannies than i ever really wanted to because of all these issues when your trying to pick a good builder :eek

I had the trans for my last truck built by a diesel shop(no longer much of a diesel shop), had that piece of crap back out about 4 times to have them re re-build it or ajust the dang thing. The warranty was great but the trans was junk, not gonna do that again.

The trans is currently trashed in my truck, planetaries went out and took the intermediate shaft and a couple drums with it. I got a quote from Karl at redline and even if it means i gotta spend a little more(which is still a fair price) i think im gonna save up and go with his trans. I have had terrible luck with auto trannies in the past because i went for the "deal", trust me it aint worth it.

There is also a big difference in running 400hp through a trans, 600hp and 800hp+. I would much rather have a OVER built trans than one right on the edge though, thats how this trans failed.

As Hobie said, There will always be someone who has something bad to say about it. I have heard nothing, but good things about RDP. However, I know Brad very well and his work for me so far has been phenomenal. I have nothing bad to say about CG or RDP. Now can't we all just agree to disagree, drink a beer, and just move on?

It says on FB you love Michelob Ultra? :supergay

Lol You know I'm just giving you a hard time. Somebody's got to lighten the mood in this thread.

We all have our own opinions of different places, and our preferences on where we trust to work on and build our trucks.
